CBC and ESR Test – Your Ultimate Guide in 2025

Complete Blood Count (CBC) and Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) are very commonly prescribed tests in India. CBC & ESR Tests are used to detect infections, inflammation at any body part and monitor overall health of a person. CBC test is more common than ESR.

A CBC test is used to check levels of various components of blood. This includes count of red blood cells (RBCs), White blood cells (WBCs) and many more parameters. An ESR test is used to measure how quickly red blood cells settle at the bottom of a test tube.

The ESR test is an indicator of inflammation in the body. CBC & ESR test are prescribed by your general physician when you get fever, fatigue or body pain. CBC and ESR test are used to detect disease like Anemia, Dengue & infections.

The CBC (Complete Blood Count) test is a very common blood test prescribed by general physicians, Gynecologists and General surgeons in India. This test is used to calculate your overall health and detect various number of diseases.

Using CBC test you can detect disorders such as anemia, any infection, leukemia. CBC test is used to measure various components of your blood. This includes count of red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), hemoglobin, hematocrit, and platelets.

When your CBC count is high, it may signal some disorder in your body. For example, high count of WBCs may indicate an ongoing infection, inflammation.

If your CBC count is low, then it can be a condition such as anemia, nutritional deficiencies, or bone marrow problems.

The ideal levels of CBC count varies as per the age & gender of a person. It should be noted here that, only registered doctors should interpret the values in CBC blood report in context with symptoms of a patient.

CBC Test - Normal Ranges of Parameters

Below we tell you what are the normal ranges of CBC  blood report parameters and what the high or low value of each parameters mean to you. So, here we go –

Hemoglobin (Hb) Range in CBC Report

Normal range of hemoglobin value in CBC report is 13.8–17.2 g/dL for men and 12.1–15.1 g/dL for women. This normal range may vary slightly from lab to lab.

A high level of hemoglobin in blood may indicate dehydration or some heart or lung infection. The low levels of hemoglobin in CBC report may means condition such as Anemia or a blood loss.

Please refer below fast card of hemoglobin range in CBC test –

Range Men Women
Normal Range of Hemoglobin in CBC Report 13.8 – 17.2 g/dL 12.1 – 15.1 g/dL
High Range of Hemoglobin in CBC Report > 17.2 g/dL > 15.1 g/dL
Low Range of Hemoglobin in CBC Report < 13.8 g/dL < 12.1 g/dL

Total WBC Count Normal Range in CBC Report

A normal WBC count range in CBC report ranges from 4,000 to 10,000 cells per microliter (µL) of blood.

A High  count of WBCs or low count of WBCs may indicate some infections, inflammation, immune disorders, or bone marrow problems.

Please refer below fast card of hemoglobin range in CBC test –

Range Men Women
Normal Range of Total WBC Count in CBC Report 4000 - 10000 /uL 4000 - 10000 /uL
High Range of Total WBC Count in CBC Report > 10000 /uL > 10000 /uL
Low Range of Total WBC Count in CBC Report < 4000 /uL < 4000 /uL

Differential Count Normal Range in CBC Report

The Differential Count in a CBC blood test report gives you a detailed breakdown of different types of white blood cells count in the blood.

This includes percentage count of Neutrophils, Lymphocytes, Eosinophils, Monocytes, and Basophils. Each type of this WBC plays a specific role in the body’s defense system.

Please refer below fast card of differential count section in CBC test report –

Parameter Normal Range in CBC Report High Range - What it May Indicate Low Range - What it May Indicate
Neutrophils 40 – 70% >70% – Bacterial infections, inflammation, stress <40% – Viral infections, bone marrow issues
Lymphocytes 20 – 40% >40% – Viral infections, chronic illness <20% – Immune disorders, chemotherapy effect
Eosinophils 1 – 6% >6% – Allergies, parasitic infections <1% – Typically not concerning
Monocytes 2 – 8% >8% – Chronic infections, autoimmune diseases <2% – Bone marrow suppression
Basophils 0 – 1% >1% – Allergies, chronic inflammation 0% – Usually normal

RBC Indices Normal Range in CBC Report

RBC (Red Blood Cell) indices in your CBC blood test report gives you detailed information about the size, shape, and hemoglobin content of red blood cells.

These RBC indices parameters will help you diagnose different types of anemia and other red cell related issues. These indices include MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW.

The ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate) test is a simple blood test used to measure how quickly red blood cells settle at the bottom of a test tube.

If RBCs settle at bottom at a faster rate than normal rate then it may indicate inflammation in the body. For example, a high ESR level, such as 40 mm/hr, can suggest conditions like infections, autoimmune diseases (like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus).

Actually, ESR is not a diagnostic test on its own. ESR test is used to detect or monitor inflammatory diseases, tuberculosis. ESR test is used in combination with other test such as CBC test.

The normal range of the ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate) test varies lab to lab and varies by age and gender in India.

For men, the normal range of ESR test in India is typically 0–15 mm/hr, and for women, 0–20 mm/hr. In children, the normal range of ESR test is around 0–10 mm/hr.

If the ESR value is high, it may indicate the presence of inflammation, infection, autoimmune disease.

Range Men Women
Normal Range of ESR in blood test 0 – 15 mm/hr 0 – 20 mm/hr
High Range of ESR in blood test >15 mm/hr >20 mm/hr
Low Range of ESR in blood test <5 mm/hr (rare) <5 mm/hr (rare)
